South Carefree Circle/New Center Point roundabout modifications begin Thursday
Tuesday, April 29, 2014

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-- Beginning Thursday, May 1, South Carefree Circle will be subject to intermittent closures from Powers Boulevard to Tutt Boulevard in each direction. Drivers should use North Carefree Circle and Constitution Avenue as detour routes. These intermittent closures will occur through the month of May 2014.

The City is in the final stages of a project to address safety issues with the roundabout at First and Main Town Center.  The existing two-lane roundabout was temporarily converted to a single lane roundabout with the use of pavement markings and signage changes. Because the anticipated improvements to safety and flow of traffic have been realized, the City is making the modifications permanent.

The current City contract involves removing some existing concrete and asphalt and replacing it with new concrete curb and gutter, concrete truck aprons, and new asphalt paving in the roundabout.

The City has coordinated with First and Main Town center to reduce the impact to drivers and businesses in the area. Additional accommodations include:

  • The contractor’s work is restricted by contract to Mondays through Thursdays without special permission to not impact weekend traffic.
  • Contractor is scheduled to work approximately 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to limit impact to evening traffic and will complete some of the work at night to further reduce the impact.
  • Number of days of major impact limited to only one week

For the safety and expediency of construction and the safety of the traveling public, the City of Colorado Springs asks motorists to pay close attention to the traffic control signs in and around this construction zone. All construction activities are weather and resource dependent.

This project is funded by the City of Colorado Springs and a Hazard Elimination Safety (HES) grant from the Federal Highway Administration.
