Volunteer Call Takers Needed to Assist During Emergencies

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo – Pikes Peak United Way 211, the City of Colorado Springs, El Paso County and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office have come together to enhance communication with the public during an emergency and are seeking volunteer call-takers.

During large emergencies, local governments operate a Joint Information Center (JIC), an extension of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), to release official information to the media and the public.  The call center is a component of the JIC and serves to answer questions from members of the community about the event.  

We are asking for members of the community to consider volunteering as call-takers in the JIC in the event of an emergency.  Volunteer call-takers will be contacted in an emergency to fill a scheduled shift in the JIC call center.  The ideal volunteer stays calm under stress, shows empathy to callers, and can operate a computer or tablet.   

Training for the JIC call-takers will be offered at Centennial Hall at 200 S. Cascade Avenue on the following dates: 

  • Monday, February 3 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, February 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

The trainings are the same; volunteers only need to attend one.
