If you recall, on 10/25/2011, at approximately 8:30 am, a 12 year old child was violently assaulted in the area of 400 East Brookside Street.
As initially reported, the victim was walking to her school bus stop when she was grabbed by a stranger. Although she struggled to free herself, she was overpowered and physically and sexually assaulted.
Following a careful and methodical investigation, the suspect was identified as Leonard Palmer. Palmer had just escaped from a Louisiana prison.
In addition to other critical evidence obtained by detectives, DNA linked the suspect to this crime.
In April, 2013, he was convicted of Kidnapping, Sexual Assault on a Child and Enticement of a Child.
On Friday, July 12, 2013, Palmer was sentenced to 224 years in prison due to being a habitual criminal.
The victim has since been hailed a hero by investigators for her ability to not only survive the attack but bravely testify against the suspect.
