Press Release 1306-004
Monday, June 10, 2013, 5:00 PM [RELEASE AT WILL]
Following are the details of a sexual assault that occurred on March 29, 1997 and resulted in the arrest of the suspect on June 5, 2013.
The victim was enjoying an evening out with her two girlfriends in downtown Colorado Springs, when an argument between them occurred. The victim decided to go outside to sit on a bench to get some fresh air. Moments later, she was approached by the suspect who said he had witnessed the argument and wanted to know if she was alright. He continued to engage her in conversation. When the victim said she was going to go back into the restaurant to tell her friends she was leaving, he convinced her not to bother to tell them and said he would give her a ride home.
The suspect drove the victim to her apartment and asked if he could go inside. When she refused, he struck her in the forehead and then sexually assaulted her.
The victim was able to provide investigators with a complete description of the suspect and a composite drawing was completed. A SANE examination kit was forwarded to CBI for analysis and profiles were developed at the time with no suspect leads identified.
In April, 2012, CSPD investigators were notified that a DNA profile had matched a profile from the Colorado Offender Index to Atlantis G. Michaelson. A subsequent search for the victim revealed that she was relieved to hear the good news and was interested in cooperating on this case. A photo line up was assembled and administered and the victim positively identified the suspect.
At the time, Michaelson was already incarcerated in US Federal Penitentiary Lee in Jonesville, VA and scheduled for release in December, 2012. He was never out of custody prior to being arrested on our warrant as he was held in Florida on other unrelated charges.
