Approximately one week ago, an internal checks and balances within the Colorado Springs Police Department identified a possible employee theft. As a result, a criminal investigation was initiated and probable cause was established for an arrest relating to time and labor issues and funds associated with a Motor Vehicle Theft grant.
This afternoon, 53 year old, Sergeant James Butierres was taken into custody and charged with Felony Theft and Felony Forgery.
Sergeant Butierres was responsible for overseeing our Motor Vehicle Theft Unit and grant funds associated with this position.
According to Chief Peter Carey, “The arrest of an officer has an impact not only on department members, but our community as well. It will be handled in the same manner and with the same integrity as every other investigation.
Mr. Butierres has been placed on Administrative Leave with pay. The case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for formal charges. If and when felony charges are filed, the Administrative Leave will be without pay.
Because this remains an active investigation, no further information or statements will be released. A photo will be released once it becomes available.
