Sexual Assault Arrest

The Special Victims Section - Crimes against Children Unit was notified by a School Resource Officer about a disclosure concerning a sexual offense involving a high school teacher. District 20 officials cooperated with law enforcement and assisted in the investigation.

Following an interview with the victim, a search warrant was obtained for the suspect’s residence.  Forty year old, Bryan Paul Mertz was transported to CJC and charged with Sexual Assault on a Child by One in a Position of Trust, CRS 18-3-405.3 a class 3 felony.

Due to Mr. Mertz’s employment as a teacher, he had contact with minors on a regular basis and there is a concern there may be additional victims.  A copy of the suspect’s photo will be released.
