Public invited to open house for Woodmen Road Corridor Improvement Project - Phase 2
The City of Colorado Springs will host a public open house to provide information about the final design of Phase 2 of the Woodmen Road Corridor Improvement Project and the Austin Bluffs/Cottonwood Creek Bridge Project. The open house will include exhibits and an opportunity to talk to the project team.
WHEN: Tuesday, October 30, 2012 - 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: Jenkins Middle School Cafeteria - 6410 Austin Bluffs Parkway
The City’s portion of the Woodmen Road Project stretches along Woodmen Road from I-25 to Powers Boulevard. Currently, the City is working on a section of Phase 2, which includes widening from four lanes to six lanes, safety improvements, sidewalks, bike lanes, aesthetics, and landscaping from the end of Phase 1 (Sam’s Club) to Lexington Drive. Reconstruction of the intersection of Woodmen Road and Union Boulevard is also included in this effort. These improvements are a continuing effort to reduce congestion along Woodmen Road.
The preferred design for the Woodmen Road/Union Boulevard intersection is a Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI). This is a modification to a traditional intersection that allows left-hand turns to occur at the same time as traffic traveling through the intersection, thus reducing delays at the signalized intersection. This has significant cost saving implications as it increases traffic flow without the need to build a bridge. There will be exhibits and a video at the open house that demonstrates how this works and describe the benefits of using a CFI.
Citizens needing special ADA or language accommodations to participate in the workshop, please call 719-388-7235 in advance.
Woodmen Road Phase 2 is being largely funded by the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority (PPRTA), which was formed when voters in Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, Green Mountain Falls, and El Paso County approved a one percent sales tax in November of 2004 to address infrastructure and transit needs in the region.
