Tips for effective waste management at events:
- Make sure guest receptacles are placed near high volume areas: bars, beverage carts, kitchens, food bussing areas, food stalls, etc.
- Locate recycling/trash/compost receptacles together for effective collection and efficient use of staff/volunteer time. Receptacles will fill up less quickly so you can empty them less often. (A lone recycling container will just fill up with trash and a lone trash container will just fill up with recyclables.)
- Empty receptacles regularly. If a trash or recycling receptacle overflows, attendees will start using any available container for any material.

Consider the enhanced public image of hosting an eco-friendly event and contract with vendors able to minimize their waste and only provide attendees with recyclable and/or compostable food packaging (i.e. not Styrofoam). - To minimize your need and cost for trash and recycling services, contract with food vendors who offer low-waste food (food you eat with your hands), such as hot dogs, pizza, pretzels, and popsicles.
- Use good signage or volunteers to help people sort correctly. Waste providers in Colorado Springs can provide you with labeled containers. Some can also provide enhanced signage. It should be clear what items are recyclable/compostable – use graphics and bilingual language when possible. (If a recycling container is over 50% contaminated, its contents will go to the landfill.)
- Reminders (signs posted at the venue, live stage announcements and messages in event programs or promotional materials) help reinforce the litter-free and recycling/composting message.
- Plastic bags are not recyclable. Materials being recycled need to be freed from any plastic bag, which can either be thrown away or reused. Compostable bags are available, if needed. Only compostable bags may be disposed of in composting containers.
- Train staff/volunteers for duties – particularly the cleanup crew. A day of great recycling efforts can be obliterated if the cleanup crew has not been trained.

Q: How do I get recycling at work?
A:
Start by looking to see who your waste hauler is (there should be a name on the dumpster that your trash goes to). Then, call them for a price quote – all of the major haulers in Colorado Springs offer recycling. One thing to keep in mind is that if you start recycling you’ll have less trash. So, you can reduce the size or frequency of trash pickups to help keep costs down. If you are renting space, you might have to make your case to the manger/owner. It could help if you know that other tenants would also like recycling. If none of those work, you can volunteer to take it yourself to one of the free drop-off sites. This is more difficult, but it’s what City employees did for years before we had service.
You’ll need indoor recycling containers – this can be anything you want to use, even just a cardboard box. The City has barrels that you can have for free if you pick them up, or you can buy marked containers at an office supply store. Generally, recycling is most successful if recycling containers are paired with each trash container. One way to do this is to remove half of your trash containers and repurpose them as recycling containers by painting them blue or green and clearly marking them as recycling. Because half of the trash will now be going into recycling, your trash containers will not fill as quickly and you will not need as many.
Educate employees. One of the most important hints here is to lead loudly and proudly by example. Fortunately, you’ll probably find that others are also happy about having access to recycling so enlist their help educating others as well. Your trash hauler can provide materials that explain what is, or isn’t, recyclable in their program.
Make sure whoever currently takes out the trash knows how to get recycling to the correct dumpster and that they can recognize a recycling container that’s been filled with non-recyclables. If it’s been filled with the wrong stuff, the materials should go to the trash instead of recycling.
