Westside Community Center receives award
Thursday, January 17, 2013

The City of Colorado Springs is pleased to announce that our Westside Community Center will be recognized by University of Colorado Colorado Springs as the 2012 Civic Innovator of the Year.  The center is receiving the award for our partnership with Woodmen Valley Chapel’s Center for Strategic Ministry. The award will be presented during a luncheon hosted by the Peak Freedom Forum and UCCS on January 29 from 11:30 – 1:30 at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort.

The Civic Innovator of the Year Award is given annually by UCCS’s Center for Study of Government and the Individual as a way to recognize and honor local individuals or organizations that are doing valuable, interesting, innovative work in the community through private sector initiatives that help address problems that may otherwise be left solely to government.  Such was the case when the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department explored alternative operational models to address reduced funding for a number of its facilities in 2010. The resulting partnership with the Center for Strategic Ministry ensured the Westside Community Center would remain open while reducing its reliance on City funds.

Since formalizing the partnership in April 2010, services have continued and expanded to provide a well-rounded community center experience that includes everything from providing summer day camps and a reading mentor program for children to nutrition classes and a senior meals program for adults.  On average, over 8,000 individuals participate in the Center’s programs on a monthly basis.  With such success, the partnership agreement was recently renewed through December 2015.

On hand to receive the award at the luncheon, and discuss the partnership, will be Dick Siever,  Executive Director of the Westside Community Center, and City Liaison Kim King, Parks Administration, Recreation and Cultural Services Manager.
