Shooting Death
Sunday, May 20, 2012, 6:00 PM [RELEASE AT WILL]
On 05-19-2012 at approximately 9:37 PM, Gold Hill Division Patrol officers responded to a shooting call for service at 429 N. Nevada Avenue. Upon arrival, officers and medical personnel located an adult male, later identified as 27 year old Colorado Springs resident James Crouch, injured from a gunshot wound to his chest. Mr. Crouch was then transported to Penrose Main Hospital in critical condition.
The initial investigation determined that 22 year old David McRea and Mr. Crouch were looking at firearms when one of the firearms that Mr. McRea was handling discharged striking Mr. Crouch. Mr. McRea was taken into custody for the charge of Second Degree Assault and transported to the Criminal Justice Center.
During the morning hours of 05-20-2012, Mr. Crouch died as a result of the gunshot wound. Mr. McRea remains in custody for charges to now include Second Degree Assault and Manslaughter.
The death of Mr. Crouch is the tenth homicide in Colorado Springs this year. At this time last year there were seven.
